HARARE – A Harare man who deliberately infected his 20-year-old lover with HIV and tried to bribe her with $100 is now facing charges of wilful transmission of HIV.
Richard Chipfunde, 25, yesterday appeared before Harare regional magistrate Esthere Chivasa who remanded him out of custody. He will be back in court on April 30, 2012.
Charges against Chipfunde arose after he had a roller-coaster relationship with the plaintiff and infected her with the virus that causes Aids.
In a moving testimony in court, the plaintiff said; “I never really trusted Richard and since our relationship was on and off. I made sure that I would regularly go for testing. At times we would have sexual intercourse without protection. But on this one fatal day after we had got back together again, I insisted that we use protection because we had been seeing other people during our split.”
The visibly shaken and confused woman added that; “Half way through he removed the protection. I asked him to stop and even cried in the process but he refused and carried on.”
The traumatised woman told the court after their sexual encounter she tested HIV positive.
Upon confrontation, Chipfunde is said to have tried to bribe her with $100 and medication.
“I knew he had infected me with the virus because I had gone for testing three times before and had tested negative on several occasions,” she said in-between sobs.
It is the state’s case that the two fell in love in 2007 and had sex without protection and separated in 2009 after Chipfunde assaulted the plaintiff.
The court heard how on several occasions, she went for HIV tests and tested negative. She, however, tested positive after having unprotected sex with Chipfunde.
